The Padar sunrise, climbed at your group's pace

Updated 26 October 2026

The Padar island hike with a group by boat is a sunrise climb on day 2 of the route. The sun comes up at 06:18 in July, but not until 05:31 in November. Senada Phinisi takes the group there, and the climb to the main viewpoint then takes 25 to 45 minutes.

The climb, step by step

Padar is a viewpoint. Padar is neither a beach stop nor a dragon site. What you come for is the ridge. From there the view takes in three bays, and the sand in each is a different colour.

The climb to that viewpoint takes 25 to 45 minutes. The upper ridge takes longer, and it is the part for those who still have legs. The path is steps at first, then loose and steep in places. Climb at the pace of the slowest. Meet at the top. Nobody is left behind.

Moderate is the rating, and it suits a climb at dawn. Shoes with grip, closed at the toe, count for more than fitness. It is dark at the start, so a head torch helps. Take water, a hat and one hand free for the rail.

On day 2 of the 2-day and 3-day routes the climb comes before breakfast. The captain and the guide set the hour on the morning.

What it is not: no dragons on Padar · not a beach stop: the point is the ridge viewpoint

Sunrise on day 2 of the route

Set the alarm early, because the hour moves with the calendar. The table gives the sunrise at Padar for every month: 06:18 in July, 05:31 in November, and it is the group that sets alarms the night before.

Walking begins well before the sun, so the group is on the ridge as the light comes. The captain and the guide decide the hour from the sunrise and the sea on the morning.

Breakfast waits on the boat when the walk is done. Day 2 then goes on to Pink Beach, lunch, Taka Makassar and Manta Point.

Ask the group first: who wants to see the sunrise from the top, and who would rather sleep? Both are fine, and the next section is for the second answer.

Who climbs and who waits on the boat

A group of 14 never climbs as one. The teenagers go first and wait at the top, the parents follow, and the grandparents choose a point where the view is already good enough. Nobody has to explain why they stopped.

The group starts together and meets at the bottom, and in between each person climbs their own length, while those who stay on board have the deck, the coffee and the first light from the water.

Small children decide on the day how far they climb. A child of five who reaches the first rail has done the Padar walk, and the ridge above it is still there.

The stairs are real and the path is loose. We make no promise about how any one person will find them, and the guide has the last word on the path.

Shoes, hat and a litre each for the climb

Pack the night before. Shoes with grip, not flip-flops. A hat and sunglasses. A litre of water each, because the sun comes up fast and the shade is thin. A small torch, or the one on the phone, for the dark start.

Sunscreen goes on before the walk, and a light layer helps while the group waits for the light. A camera needs a charged battery, and the boat is where the charger waits. Ask us about charging points on board.

In places the path is loose and steep, so every one of you wears sturdy shoes from the very first step. Hands are for the rail. The bag goes on the back.

FAQ

How long is the climb?

Plan the climb to the main viewpoint at 25 to 45 minutes of effort. Past it, the upper ridge needs longer. The path is steps and then loose, steep ground, and parts of it are steep. The rating is moderate, and the guide has the last word on the path on the morning, so tell the guide who in the group is nervous.

Can children climb Padar?

Children climb at their own pace, and small children decide on the day how far they go. The path is steep and loose in parts, so closed shoes matter. One parent can go to the first rail with the child while the rest of the group goes on, and the group meets again at the bottom.

Is Padar before breakfast?

Yes. On day 2 of the 2-day and 3-day routes the Padar walk comes at sunrise, and breakfast follows on the boat. The July sunrise is at 06:18. The group is walking well before that.

Can we skip Padar?

Yes. Nobody in the group has to climb, and the boat is the same on the deck below. Those who stay have the first light from the water, and the group meets again for breakfast.

What shoes do we need?

Closed shoes with grip. Some stretches are loose and steep, which rules out sandals and flip-flops for every one of you. Bring a hat, water and sunscreen, and leave the heavy bags on the boat.
