Senada Phinisi
A hill for the first afternoon, short enough for everyone
Updated 26 October 2026
Kelor Island short hike viewpoint with kids: a steep, dry hill to a viewpoint over the bay, 15 to 30 minutes up, on the first afternoon of the Senada Phinisi route. The group decides on the day how far to climb.
The hill in twenty minutes
Kelor, a small hilly islet, is an hour away by boat from Labuan Bajo. Up a short climb there is a viewpoint with the bay below. Think of it as one steep little hill: no long trek, and no dragons here.
Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the climb. The rating is moderate. Expect a path that is steep and dry. Sturdy shoes help on it, and a hat does more than most of the kit.
It is a good first stop for a group, because the hill is short enough that nobody is afraid of it and steep enough that everyone knows they have done something. Those who climb get the bay, and those who stay get the beach.
Kelor is the first sail of day 1, and free time on day 4 of the sample route.

What it is not: short steep hill, not a long trek · not a dragon site · on the Senada routes it is the first stop on day 1, a short climb before Rinca
Children and grandparents
Children like Kelor, because it is short and has a top. The first climb of the trip is also the test of the group's shoes, hats and water, and it is better to learn at Kelor than at Padar.
Small children decide on the day how far they climb, with a parent beside them. The path is steep and dry, and loose in places, so a hand on a child is worth more than a rule.
Grandparents have the same choice. Some climb part of the way and sit with the bay in front of them, and some stay on the sand. The rest of the group reports on the top.
Nobody has to explain why they stopped. Who wants the top at Kelor, and who is saving the legs for Padar?

The hill of the first afternoon
The first afternoon is a chain. Lunch on board after the pickup, the sail to Kelor, the hill, the walk at Rinca, then the bats at Kalong at sunset and dinner on board. Kelor is the warm-up for the whole chain.
Kelor is a natural first or last stop of a trip because of its distance from the harbour. On this boat it is the first on day 1, and on the 4-day sample route it comes round again as the last.
The group climbs at one pace if it wants to, and apart if it does not.
Treat the chain of stops as the plan, because the order itself is the captain's to set on the day.
Free time on day 4 of the sample route
On the 4-day sample route, Kelor comes back on the last morning as free time: a walk, a swim, and a rest on the beach. The 4-day route is a sample route, and the final order of stops is confirmed with the captain and in writing before you pay.
The last morning is the quiet one. The group has done the dragons, the sunrise and the snorkels, and the legs are tired. Kelor gives a short walk to those who want it and a beach to the rest.
After breakfast the boat sails back to Labuan Bajo, arriving around midday. Book flights after 14:00 on the last day.
A 4-day trip is a whole-boat trip only, and there is no open-trip seat for it.

Can small children climb?
Small children decide on the day how far they climb, with a parent beside them. The path is steep, dry and loose in parts, so closed shoes matter.
