Senada Phinisi
Flights, visas and the first day, for a group from Europe
Updated 26 October 2026
Getting to Labuan Bajo from Europe for a boat trip takes one long flight to Asia and a short domestic one, through Bali or Jakarta. Before boarding Senada Phinisi, three things need settling: the visa, a hotel for the night before, and a flight home that leaves after 14:00 on the last day.
Planes into Labuan Bajo from Europe and Asia
Labuan Bajo has one airport, Komodo International (LBJ), and few direct international flights. Most groups from Europe and Asia land in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and take a domestic flight on from there. From Bali it's about an hour and a quarter to Labuan Bajo, from Surabaya about an hour and a half, and from Jakarta between two and a half and three hours.
We don't name airlines, because timetables change faster than a web page. Check the current schedule when you book, and have the organiser collect one thing from everyone: their flight numbers, so we can plan the pickup.
Arrive a day early. The boat leaves at 11:00, so the group should already be in Labuan Bajo the day before. The harbour and the hotels are a short drive from the airport.
A group arriving on three different flights is perfectly normal. Tell us each arrival time, and we set one pickup for everyone around the last one.
| Airport | Komodo International Airport, code LBJ |

Visa and passports for a group
Visa rules change, so check with the embassy or the immigration website for every passport in the group before you book. A family with three nationalities can get three different answers.
According to the immigration information we hold, citizens of 97 countries can get a visa on arrival, others apply online first, and the visa is good for 30 days. Every passport needs six months' validity and two blank pages, and each traveller has to show a return or onward ticket. There's also a free digital arrival card to fill in before you land. A rise in the fee has been announced with no confirmed date, so check the figure on the official site.
Check whose passport is close to expiry. Far better to find that out in October than at the check-in desk.
We need everyone's names and ID details at least seven days before departure, for the boarding pass.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) | Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. |
|---|---|
| e-VoA | The same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days. |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly. |
| Length of stay | 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry |
| Extension | Once, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end. |
| Visa-free entry | 30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages |
| Onward ticket | Proof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA |
| All Indonesia arrival card | Free and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration. |
| Arriving in Labuan Bajo | Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight |
| Bali tourist levy | IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee. |

Money, tickets and tips
In Labuan Bajo you pay in rupiah; nothing else is practical. You'll find cash machines on the main road by the harbour and in the airport's arrivals hall, but there are none out on the islands, so take out cash before you board. Each machine caps the withdrawal and charges a fee, and your own bank adds another.
Cards work in hotels, in the bigger restaurants and for the boat, through our payment link. Small shops, markets and taxis want cash. The park ticket is paid per person per day and is never part of the boat price; the park fees page has the figures.
Tips are not included in any price, and we don't suggest an amount. Tipping is appreciated but not expected, and the group decides together what to give the crew and the guide at the end of the trip.
| Currency | Indonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026 |
|---|---|
| ATMs | BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board. |
| ATM limits | IDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges |
| Cards or cash | Cards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash. |
| Tipping | Appreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range. |

Sun, health and the packing list
The sun is strong, the shade is thin and the stairs are real, so pack for all three: shoes with grip for the hikes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a backpack and your own medicines. Bring some emergency cash, and wear a swimsuit under your clothes for the first stop.
We don't give medical advice. Talk to your doctor or a travel clinic about vaccinations and seasickness remedies. The information we hold says dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so cover up at dusk, and that dogs and monkeys can carry rabies, so keep away from animals. We strongly recommend that every guest buys travel insurance covering medical care and evacuation.
Tap water isn't safe to drink. On board there's free-flow mineral water, tea, coffee and milk. Mains power is 230 volts with two-pin round plugs, and the town has power cuts, so charge everything before boat day. Ask us about charging points on board.
| Insurance | Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive |
|---|---|
| Private hospital | Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber |
| Public hospital | RSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber |
| Pharmacies | Available in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home |
| Emergency numbers | 112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue |
| Health risks | Dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite. |

The day before the boat
Land, check in, count heads. That is the whole job of the day before. The hotel is booked, the passports are in one bag, and the cabin plan is already agreed in writing.
In the evening, post the pickup time in the group chat: pickup from the hotel or the airport comes before an 11:00 start, and we confirm the exact time the day before. Pack one bag for the boat and leave the big suitcases at the hotel, if the hotel agrees to keep them.
On the day, carry your passport or ID card, because the names on the boarding pass have to match the harbour's list. The harbour authority can close sailings for weather at short notice. If the boat is stopped, the group chooses between another phinisi in the same class or above on the same dates, with nothing extra to pay, and a full refund within 14 days.
Have dinner ashore, drink water, sleep. The first lunch is on the boat.
Flying home after the trip
The 3-day and 4-day trips finish with the boat back in Labuan Bajo around midday, which is why flights should leave after 14:00. The ride back to your hotel or the airport is part of the price.
On the 2-day trip there's no fixed return time, because the day follows the sea. Book an evening or next-morning flight, and leave some margin.
If the budget runs to a hotel night after the boat, take it. Everyone gets a shower, the salt comes out of the clothes, and the long trip home starts rested. Whoever has the earliest flight sets the plan for everyone else.
Hotels, flights and tips aren't in the boat price. We can help with a hotel if you ask, and the flights are yours to book.
