Komodo with children: dragons, rangers, hikes and the boat

Is Komodo safe with children, dragons and boat included? Rangers lead every park walk, the stairs and the heat are the real effort, and on Senada Phinisi children aged 0 to 2 travel free while from age 3 the full fare applies.
What rangers do and what children are told
The dragons are wild, and the rangers are the reason a family can walk among them. Walks in the park are with a park ranger, and the ranger sets the distance and the route. Tell the children to stay in the group, keep the distance the ranger sets and follow the ranger.
A sighting is never promised. The park is not a zoo, and the animals do their own thing. Tell the children that before you land, so a lizard asleep in the shade is a good result.
Trekking at Rinca and on Komodo needs a ranger. Ranger and pier levies are paid separately from the park ticket and can change. The captain decides when the boat moves on.
The hikes children can do, and the stairs they cannot
Padar is stairs and a dirt path to a viewpoint, done at sunrise. The adult with the child decides on the day whether to go on or turn back. Rinca is a trek on dirt paths. Kelor is a short steep hill.
Nobody goes ashore at Kalong. At dusk the group watches the flying foxes from the boat. Pink Beach and the snorkel stops are for the water.
Grandparents and small children decide on the day how far they climb, and no one has to reach the top. Find out which of the children want to walk.
For a toddler the stairs are the limit, not the heat. A parent who carries a child up and down Padar needs both hands free, so the other adult takes the water and the hat.
Heat, water and the shade on deck
Komodo is hot. Shoes with grip, a hat and water go in every small bag. The boat has the dining area indoors and a sundeck with bean bags, and shade is where you find it.
Free-flow mineral water, tea, coffee and milk are on board, with a dispenser and a refrigerator.
For sunscreen, bring reef-safe. A child who gets tired can rest on the sundeck while the others walk.
Offer water before anyone asks. Free-flow water is on board, so refilling a bottle costs nothing and takes a minute.
Where children sleep on the boat
Babies and two-year-olds sail free with a parent or guardian. The full fare starts at age 3. Give us the ages when you write, and the cabin plan comes back to you in writing before you pay.
A Panoramic Suite takes up to four on a queen bed and extra beds, the Deluxe Ocean Suite up to three, a Superior Suite two. Every cabin has its own bathroom, so night-time trips are short.
Ask us about a cot or a child seat; we answer in writing.
Night comes with the sea around the hull, which some children love and some do not. If a child needs a particular bed, say so and our written answer arrives before the payment.

Life jackets, snorkelling and the first swim
Life jackets and a liferaft are on board. Child-sized life jackets: ask, and the written reply comes first.
The first swim is at Pink Beach or a shallow snorkel stop. Take it slowly, with the life jacket on, and an adult within reach. The canoe is for the beaches and goes out with a grown-up.
Seasickness cannot be predicted, and we do not claim it away. Ask your doctor about what to give a child who gets it. The boat cruises at 8 to 10 knots.
An adult goes in with every child, and a life jacket stays on until the adult says otherwise. The stops are the sea's decision and the captain's, and neither is hurried for a group.
What to ask the group before you book
Put four questions to the whole group. How old is the youngest, and does the youngest sleep through the night? Who stays on the boat if the youngest is tired on Padar morning? Who wants a balcony, and who would rather not have one beside a four-year-old?
Swimmers and non-swimmers go on the same list, with the life jacket rule next to each name. Note the answers, send them with the ages, and we write back with the cabin plan.

Is Komodo safe for a 5-year-old?
The organiser is the best judge of a five-year-old, and we do not claim to know yours. Walks are with a ranger, the stairs and the heat are the effort, and life jackets are on board. Sizes for small children: ask us, and we confirm in writing.
Do rangers walk with the group?
Yes. Park walks at Rinca and on Komodo are led by a park ranger, who sets the route and the distance from the animals. Ranger levies are paid separately from the park ticket, and the group follows the ranger.
What about seasickness?
Nobody can predict it, and we do not claim it away. The boat cruises at 8 to 10 knots. For anyone, child or adult, who is prone to it, a doctor's advice before travelling is worth having. Tell us too, so our cabin answer takes it into account.

With the parents, in the same cabin. A Panoramic Suite takes up to four guests on a queen bed and extra beds, the Deluxe Ocean Suite takes up to three, and a Superior Suite takes two without an extra bed. We confirm the plan in writing.
What do children pay?
Free travel applies to children from 0 to 2 who sail with a parent or guardian. The full price starts at age 3, whether the group has a seat or the whole boat. Park tickets are separate. Give us the ages when you write and we confirm in writing.
